What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Fab Foodstuff: Turmeric Chicken Curry! For those who dabble in traditional ethnic dishes, turmeric is a well-known spice that typically gives food a rich golden yellow hue. Although turmeric has a slightly bitter taste, curry powder combines it with cumin and chili powder to catapult the flavor from mild to very spicy. Keep in mind, a little goes a long way when adding flavor and color. I find turmeric mildly aromatic with a slight scent of ginger, which is appealing when added to chicken. Also, it can jazz up boring white rice by making an ordinary dish look a bit fancy.
TURMERIC CHICKEN CURRY
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound boneless skinless chicken
1 onion, chopped
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup chicken broth
1 cup crushed tomatoes
4 teaspoons turmeric
1/8 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
Instructions:
In a large skillet, warm olive oil over medium heat. Add chicken to brown, turning once. Add onions. Sprinkle with garlic powder. Sauté for 5 minutes until onions are soft and fragrant. Add chicken broth, crushed tomatoes, turmeric, cloves, thyme, sea salt, and black pepper. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve over rice. Garnish with fresh cilantro.

This looks really good, and the turmeric is so good for you! I’m one of those who would substitute flat-leafed parsley for the cilantro…

Parsley is a nice substitute. Both have amazing flavors, in my opinion. 🌿🌱🍃

I love the pretty color it gives the chicken, not to mention a robust flavor.
Why go with the same old chicken when you can spice it up this way? 🙂

A word to the cautious cook: turmeric can stain a pretty manicure. 🙈

Gail, on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being no heat and 10 being a serious level of heat, where would you put your threshold?

I’m average or a little above…. so, 6-7.

For me, it tends to vary. At times, I do tend to go for mild or medium spicy foods. There are times when I go for the hardcore spicy foods.

Great reading! I bought a bottle of hot sauce with a skeleton mask and hood over the cap. lol 💀

Gail, what are some of the hottest sauces that you have tasted?

I lean toward habanero peppers, which some don’t care for. But since you asked, “Hog’s Ass” for pleasure and the HOTTEST is “Ass Reaper” made with African oleoresin and scotch bonnet peppers. Trust me, a little goes a long way! 🍃🌶

Gail, unless I have a hot sauce named Ass Reaper that I am reviewing, any comments otherwise that have crude language will not be subject to approval. This may seem counterintuitive, however, outside of a hot sauce review with such a name, crude language is not going to be permissible.

I understand completely. I wish it had another name, but the label is very specific. Sorry about that. 🍃🌶

Gail, so there is no room for misunderstanding, I may post an analysis of that sauce if it came into my possession. However, the only reason for this is if I had a sauce by that name. However, comments that have any crude language would not be approved.

Gail, I know that people tend to be very different in terms of how much spicy foods and hot sauces they can tolerate, however, I find my spice threshold tho be reasonably high. Having said that, if I find a hot sauce to be too mild or too hot for my taste, I know it.

Have you tried the limited edition Carolina Reaper Madness Chip by Paqui? It is considered the world’s spiciest tortilla chip. It comes only ONE to a package. 🍃🌶
