Dining Outside the Home: Hā Coffee Bar in Lihue, Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: Hā Coffee Bar in Lihue, Kauai!  Now here is a coffee shoppe with a mission statement. Hā means “breath”, a description of island culture. It’s about the ohana community, or family, of people who choose to work together in unity. At Hā Coffee Bar you’ll find coffee, tea, and local-sourced goods. Coffee-lovers may choose between whole bean, espresso, cold brewed, pour over, and french press coffee. The atmosphere is conducive for interaction. Make yourself at home in a comfy chair, or choose a rustic table with a window view, or slide up to the communal wooden table below the vaulted ceiling fan. Sit and sip. Support the environment, support the culture, support the community. We’re all in this together. Everyone is welcome.

Dining Outside the Home: Kalapaki Joe’s Sports Bar in Lihue, Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: Kalapaki Joe’s Sports Bar in Lihue, Kauai!  Known as the “Westernmost Sports Bar in the U.S.”, it is a favorite gathering place for fun and entertainment. And the extensive menu is pretty tasty, too. I chose Ahi tuna seasoned with a toasted sesame furikake, then grilled to perfection and laid on a bed of shredded cabbage and white rice. Feel the kick? That’s wasabi cream, you’re newest addiction. Don’t hate me. These volcanic spices are what makes this plate an island favorite. Come early, relax, chat a bit, and take advantage of Happy Hour specials before the crowd sets in and the games begin. Well done, Kalapaki Joe’s.

Dining Outside the Home: Duke’s Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: Duke’s Kauai!  You won’t want to miss the Aloha Hour at this beachfront bar located a few footsteps from Kalapaki Bay. Live music is sure to entertain with classic tunes and old favorites. These guys know what they’re doing. The beach drinks, like Duke’s featured Mai Tai, is the perfect blend of local rum and Hawaiian fruit juices. The dark rum floater balances out the orange curaçao nicely. Pair it with a pupu order of Breaded Coconut Shrimp. The spicy lilikoi sauce will have you practically licking your fingers. Don’t forget to look around and enjoy the view. This is Kauai, after all.

Dining Outside the Home: La Spezia Restaurant and Wine Bar in Old Kōloa Town, Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: La Spezia Restaurant and Wine Bar in Old Kōloa Town, Kauai!  Authentic cuisine is served Italian-style all week long, but it’s Sunday Brunch that grabs the attention. Choose your poison: the Bloody Mary Bar, Sparkling Champagne Mimosa, or an extended wine list that is nonstop. If the tables are full, no worries. Grab a seat at the bar. There’s never a dull moment in the midst of conversation. Breakfast entrees include Brie French Toast, Prosciutto Panini, or Three Egg Omelette along with a plethora of limitless menu selections. The hollandaise sauce on the Eggs Benedict is numero uno, in my opinion. I practically licked the plate clean! Relax in the cozy atmosphere and embrace the island atmosphere. Then next time, go back for dinner.

Dining Outside the Home: Murrieta’s Bar & Grill in Calgary, Canada

Dining Outside the Home: Murrieta’s Bar & Grill in Calgary, Canada! Are you searching for adventure? Do you have a passion for life? If so, you may have something in common with this restaurant’s namesake located in downtown Calgary. Joaquin Murrieta, a gold rush Robin Hood-like outlaw, was the subject of western fantasy, raiding gold from the rich and sharing with the poor. Still somewhat of an urban legend, his myth lives on within the walls of the renovated Alberta Hotel. Enter on the side street, ascend a winding staircase, and slide onto a seat outside on the second-story terrace overlooking the street activity that seems nonstop. Whether you take a “Happy Hour” mid-day break, meet friends for an early dinner, or dance to the music of late-night bands, it is impossible not to be consumed by the rustic surroundings of Old World tradition.

Dining Outside the Home: Lorena’s Mexican Restaurant Bar & Grill in East Peoria, Illinois

Dining Outside the Home: Lorena’s Mexican Restaurant Bar & Grill in East Peoria, Illinois! Whenever my husband and I travel, we tend to gravitate to places that serve authentic Mexican food, recommended by locals. On a day when the outside temperature was as stifling as the Chihuahuan Desert, nothing sounded better than an ice cold margarita on the rocks. As we slid into a booth at Lorena’s, the air conditioner struggled to keep up. No worries. A smiling waiter offered salsa picante that matched the heat with hot sauce and chilies. One bite, one sip, and our minds were flowing with the mariachi music. “Fiesta Fajitas for Two, por favor.” Moments later, a sizzling platter overflowing with tender meat and roasted vegetables arrived satiating the appetite. Gracias, amigo!
