What’s cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? It’s as simple as reciting your A-B-Cs. One of my passions is being at home in my own “gourmet” kitchen.   I love to cook, and my husband loves that I do it often.  Now more than ever, since I am retired, I relish the thought of creating something delicious from scratch.  I adore time-honored traditions using tried-and-true recipes. Yet, I often never think twice about tweaking old favorites or modifying others to suit the inner craving of the moment.  Most of the recipes serve 2-4 people, but can be altered in any direction.  The leftovers are golden morsels to be eaten again later or shared with others.  And I love to share.  To me, seeing a smile in gratitude is thanks enough. The recipes you will find here in the next several weeks can be prepared very easily.  Feel free to contact me with questions.  Now take a deep breath, inhale the aromas, and join me on a tasteful journey entitled, “EATING MY WAY THROUGH THE ALPHABET: THE DAILY SPECIAL!”

A Cut Above

What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen: A Cut Above. Cooking and baking at home can be more than ordinary, especially when it becomes appealing to those around you. True, family recipes may become second nature because your mother made it, her mother before her passed it on, and her mother did the same. When it comes down to it, patience is still a key objective even when meals come together quickly. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate modern conveniences as much as the next home chef. Not everything has to be difficult to be delicious. Recently, my friend was exasperated when her microwave oven went on the fritz. It wasn’t a total loss, but a part had to be ordered. This caused a major adjustment in her menu selection for the week. We’ve all been there. After four days, the microwave got repaired and her sense of calm returned. Life is like that. A Symphony of Flavors

Our taste buds can actually embody the most unusual combinations of food. By paying attention to our sense of taste we can embark on a daily adventure of the palate. Feeling energetic? Incorporate tangy foods with slightly sweet ingredients. Or perhaps you may be in the mood for an earthy partner with a rich, honeycomb nectar. Just as music triggers past experiences and emotions, food has the ability to transport us places we’ve been years ago. I often cook while listening to music, don’t you? It might be a lively song that matches the rhythm of stirring cake batter and icing. (After all, wooden spoons make great microphones!) Then again, sashaying from one end of the kitchen to another for various ingredients and utensils can feel like dancing. Who knew? Whatever your style, embrace each challenge like a symphony conductor. Some of my posts continue to be favored by Ina Garten’s The Barefoot Contessa, on Instagram (@gail _dorna). You can even find me on Pinterest @Gail Dorna. It’s very easy to search for recipes there on the board entitled “Gail’s Kitchen Recipes”. I’d love to connect with you there as well. Uplifting Aromas

Remember the early days of learning to cook? Was it 4-H or junior high Home Economics? It may have been in grandma’s kitchen using mid century utensils, chipped ironstone, and aluminum pots or mother’s enamelware , melmac, and plastic storage containers in harvest gold. Perhaps you even inherited a coveted cast iron skillet, the workhorse staple dating back to 1890. In any event, we all have those built-in memories of homemade favorites wafting through a lifetime of uplifting aromas. Sure, techniques have changed and improved, but that’s kinda the point. Everyone can be an expert. I’d like to think so.  Some of my posts have been favored by the “Food Network” on Twitter (Snapshotsincursive @DornaGail) as well as Ina Garten’s The Barefoot Contessa, on Instagram (gail _dorna). Graze or Gobble

Are you a slow eater or a fast eater? Depends on the day. Is Time a factor that makes you practically inhale a plate of food on your way from one commitment to another? Maybe you planted yourself in front of the tv to stream the latest season of a popular series and before you knew it, dinner was gone. (Some blame it on the dog.) Me? I say, if the food didn’t look so appealing, I wouldn’t devour it. On the other hand, as a grazer, I’ve been known to be “Chatty McChat Chat” in conversation lingering over a meal. It’s a tipsy-turvy world. We all have those days when we eat too quickly. Sooooo, the next collection of recipes gives you the opportunity to graze or gobble. Only you can decide. Time to Eat

How many times in your life have you heard those three words? Hundreds? Thousands? Gazillions?

Whether you’re a loving parent, a gracious host, or simply a one-team show, it’s only natural after preparing a meal to get the attention of those partaking. I’m a stickler for eating food when it’s hot. After all, pulling everything together is kinda like a magic show of setup, assembly, and deliverance. Some days it works and others may become a total disaster. I call that “eating our mistakes” and learning from them. We’ve all been there, done that. What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen?
