Dining Outside the Home: Piazza in Princeville, Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: Piazza in Princeville, Kauai. How does a French chef off the island of Madagascar find his way to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, you wonder. It really makes little difference once you taste his flare for Italian food. Chef Christophe is the master, hands down, at creating out-of-this-world culinary creations designed to seduce the palate at Piazza on the North Shore. Every dish is uniquely designed from oven-roasted tomatoes on the wood-fired oven pizza to the hand-seasoned croutons on the Caesar salad. For the adventure enthusiast, might I suggest the log cabin stacked polenta fries? Nothing but the best of local, organic ingredients are carefully crafted for your enjoyment. My fav? The Seared Ahi Niçoise Salad. I see it in your future, too.

Dining Outside the Home: Hukilau Lanai in Kapaa, Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: Hukilau Lanai in Kapaa, Kauai. On an island surrounded by water in the middle of the Pacific, people are still known to step away from fresh seafood in search of a prime cut of beef. The chefs at Hukilau Lanai understand that craving and aim to please. Their dinner menu offers a main course of perfectly tender Prime Rib au Jus seasoned in Hawaiian sea salt and spices. Whether it’s sliced pink and rare or medium-well, it does not disappoint. A small portion of fat around the edge adds amazing flavor to the beef while it’s cooking. Slice it off or indulge yourself. Drizzle or dip the simple pan sauce (au jus) made from natural juices and slather with a dab of horseradish. Mmmm. If you get the craving, remember to go early. Because prime rib must be roasted slowly, once it’s cut and served, it’s gone for the night.

Dining Outside the Home: Garden Island Barbecue & Chinese Restaurant in Lihue, Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: Garden Island Barbecue & Chinese Restaurant in Lihue, Kauai. A true sign of a popular eatery is a full parking lot before you ever set foot inside the door. In the short time it takes to park the car, pay attention to the steady flow of customers clutching brown bag take-out orders. Proof positive something pretty tasty is going on inside. The wait staff is practiced in efficient service, yet patient enough to answer questions and offer suggestions. Another plus. Casual dining means a table for two as well as larger tables for friends and family-size groups. I’m not gonna lie. An extensive menu offers choices beyond your wildest expectations. Szechuan for a kick of spice, a healthy dose of vegetables, tasty barbecue combos, sizzling beef, mixed seafood platters, and more. Ample servings and portion sizes make sharing delightful. After all, who doesn’t enjoy nibbling a bite or two of something different? Get off the beaten path and mingle with locals.

Dining Outside the Home: Olympic Café in Kapaa, Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: Olympic Café in Kapaa, Kauai. Even on rainy days you have to venture out for a bite to eat. For starters, a slightly salty/savory-rimmed Bloody Mary with a spicy kick is in order. Perched on the second level of the Olympic Café overlooking street activity has proven to be quite entertaining as more clouds rolled in and the sky opened up. A guy on a bicycle got drenched from the pounding rain. He nestled a paper bag under his armpit while his legs pedaled full speed through potholes filling with street water. Meanwhile, a steaming hot humongous burrito lunch arrived, so the open air seating was perfect for watching passing showers at a warm and dry distance. After all, you can’t rush perfection.

Dining Outside the Home: La Spezia Restaurant in Koloa, Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: La Spezia Restaurant in Koloa, Kauai. Here’s the rule of thumb: If you’re going to sit and relax on a Sunday morning, indulge yourself with the Special of the Day and the Bloody Mary Bar at La Spezia. It’s a match made in heaven. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff make you feel at home, that’s for sure. The Bloody Mary Bar offers a tabletop of ingredients to build-your-own. The signature benedicts, fluffy quiche wedges, 3-egg omelettes, and applewood bacon are incredible! But you’ll have to make a return visit because the portions are generous. For a sweeter beginning, try the fluffy pancakes with real maple syrup or the fruit-stuffed French toast. Whatever you do, save a little room for their special blend of smooth Kauai and Kenyan coffee. It’s simply delish.

Dining Outside the Home: Kintaro Japanese Restaurant in Kapaa, Kauai

Dining Outside the Home: Kintaro Japanese Restaurant in Kapaa, Kauai! When the locals recommend a place to eat, pay attention, especially if they are making reservations for a private celebration behind shoji screens with tatami mat seating. Kintaro is that good. For others, it’s first-come, first-served whether you are seated at the exotic sushi bar, a table for two in the dining room, or family-style seating around the teppan yaki table grills. For starters a plate of complimentary crispy fried wontons were served by the friendly wait staff. They were so yummy, we ordered more. And because using chop sticks is part of the experience, the filet mignon and lobster tail combo were already cut into bite-sized cubes arranged on the plate. The rest is easy. Sit back, bask in the Asian decor, and enjoy the cuisine.

Dining Outside the Home: Eiffel Tower Restaurant in Las Vegas, Nevada

Dining Outside the Home: Eiffel Tower Restaurant in Las Vegas, Nevada! There’s nowhere more romantic than a table for two on the eleventh floor of the Eiffel Tower, in my opinion. As the sun dips below the horizon, a light show of the marvelous Bellagio fountains sway to the beat of Paris music. It’s nothing short of magical. At the beginning of the night, be sure to order dessert: a light, decadent soufflé that bakes while you dine. Grand Marnier is my favorite. You can thank me later. Whether it’s a special occasion, honored celebration, or date night, any meal in the plush dining room becomes extraordinary. Pamper yourself. Gaze at the glittering lights of the Las Vegas skyline. Sip on French champagne. Hold hands. Nibble on chocolate. At the end of the night you will have experienced “The Eiffel Affair”, without the airfare to France.

Chayo Mexican Kitchen, located on The LINQ Promenade, is like an oasis in the desert. Surrounded by lush palm trees, the outdoor patio offers downtime shade from the Nevada sun. Kick back for a breather. Hear the sizzle of grilled shrimp fajitas. Appreciate the freshness of authentic street corn. Sling back a Don Julio tequila flight. It’s all about the journey.

Dining Outside the Home: Mon Ami Gabi French Restaurant in Las Vegas, Nevada

Dining Outside the Home: Mon Ami Gabi French Restaurant in Las Vegas, Nevada! Why does French food seem to taste better than any other? Could it be the bakery-fresh baguette slathered in sea salt butter? Perhaps it’s the heartwarming and nourishing combination of savory meat paired with garden veggies. Or maybe it’s the fact that a leisurely meal is eaten outdoors for conversation and spectacular views. Mon Ami Gabi French Restaurant has the right idea. Experience life as the French do. Dine on the open-air patio from an extensive menu that promises to satisfy. Sit back, sip a little, laugh in merriment, bask in the outdoors, and enjoy the entire experience. It’s truly priceless.
