Dining Outside the Home: Kalapaki Joe’s Sports Bar in Lihue, Kauai! On the edge of nowhere sits the island’s secret for fresh salad meals, ocean fish, Happy Hour specials, ginormous burgers, cold beverages, and televised sports. Stop in for one reason or another. And if you’re hungry, go for the Big Plate Entrees. The Ahi Poke Crunch Salad was an adventure in fusion food: raw Ahi, Asian slaw, crispy tortilla strips, Oriental vinaigrette, and wasabi cream. No matter your craving, Kalapaki Joe’s brings people of the East and West closer.
Dining Outside the Home: The Library Restaurant and Pub in Indianapolis, Indiana! Whether you choose private dining for celebrations, a gastro-pub atmosphere where sports abound, or tasteful seating among works of art, you’ll feel at home at The Library Restaurant and Pub. Seasonal favorites, as well as chef specialties, enhance an already extensive menu. For starters, indulge in Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail bathed in a zesty horseradish sauce. Move on to make a meal of Grilled Romaine, drizzled with olive oil, parmesan cheese, and Caesar dressing. Mmmm. There’s a method to my madness, you see. The made-in-house desserts make a grande finale. I recommend the Crème Brûlée topped with caramelized sugar. C’est Magnifique!
Take a seat on the balcony to greet the indescribable sunrise as joggers leave footprints in the sand on an invigorating morning run. Catch a bird’s eye view of yoga enthusiasts communing with nature, enriching body and soul. Meticulous gardeners groom ornamental flower beds with flawless precision for an impeccable stroll on the way to the pool. Marvel at rich island history, native culture, local artwork, Lowcountry cuisine, and beachfront recreation pressed into twelve miles of nonstop beauty along the Atlantic Ocean. This million dollar view is as pristine as a tropical paradise. Welcome to Hilton Head Island, a South Carolina resort town and coastal haven for the travel enthusiast.
Dining Outside the Home: JJ’s Broiler in Lihue, Kauai! When visiting a tropical island, it’s not unusual to expect fresh fish daily as well as locally-grown ingredients. Open the menu at JJ’s Broiler and see. “Voted Island’s Best” Fish and Chips is a natural choice, in my opinion. A generous platter of Pacific Mahi Mahi engulfed in a crispy beer batter coating is paired with seasoned french fries for a salty crunch that does not disappoint. The house tartar sauce is a nice complement. Take advantage of the spectacular ocean view. Dine on the outdoor terrace for an open-air experience. Ignore the feathered friends wandering around. They simply cannot resist a crumb or two that has fallen to the ground.
Dining Outside the Home: Kalapaki Joe’s Sports Bar in Lihue, Kauai! Known as the “Westernmost Sports Bar in the U.S.”, it is a favorite gathering place for fun and entertainment. And the extensive menu is pretty tasty, too. I chose Ahi tuna seasoned with a toasted sesame furikake, then grilled to perfection and laid on a bed of shredded cabbage and white rice. Feel the kick? That’s wasabi cream, you’re newest addiction. Don’t hate me. These volcanic spices are what makes this plate an island favorite. Come early, relax, chat a bit, and take advantage of Happy Hour specials before the crowd sets in and the games begin. Well done, Kalapaki Joe’s.
Nakiska Ski Resort Lures Sport Enthusiasts! Whether you’re a history buff or a sports enthusiast, Nakiska is a prestigious area worth noting. You may recall its “claim to fame” at the 1988 Winter Olympics. Located in western Canada, in the province of Alberta, its countless slopes on Mount Allan are visible from Highway 40, near the roadside marker. For curiosity seekers, take the road to the entrance of the resort. Upon closer scrutiny, you may be surprised and elated to find the Olympic flame still burns.
Dining Outside the Home: JJ’s Broiler in Lihue, Kauai. Not your typical sports bar and restaurant. Maybe it’s the oceanfront dining by candlelight that makes it unique. Or it could be the incredible French Onion Soup served as if it came directly from a Paris café. Most guys would say it’s the generous cut of Prime Rib, garlic-rubbed, served nightly with your favorite beverage in front of several high-definition TV screens. The bottom line is this: The food is great, the location is a bonus, and the sports are thrown in for good measure. Everyone Wins!
