What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Palatable Possibilities: Papaya Pineapple Boat! The first time I tasted fresh papaya I was on the island of Kauai. I was told it had indescribable flavor different from cantaloupe, watermelon, or mango. They were right. Papaya is not sugary sweet. It’s light and juicy with a buttery texture that allows it to taste almost creamy. Does that make sense? The lime actually adds to the tropical ambiance, which is why I prefer a squeeze of fresh to slightly mingle with the other ingredients. I’ve read that the rough black seeds can be bitter to taste. Honestly, I’ve never gotten that far to put them to the test.
PAPAYA PINEAPPLE BOAT
Ingredients:
I ripe papaya, halved horizontally with seeds removed
1 cup pineapple chunks
1 cup blackberries
2 tablespoons red onion, cut into strips
Fresh Lime, for garnish
Instructions:
Gently remove fruit from papaya; dice into chunks. Place hollowed out shells onto shallow plates. Arrange diced papaya, pineapple chunks, fresh blackberries, and red onion strips. Squeeze lime juice over all. Allow fruit “bowls” to rest for 30 minutes at room temperature. This will enhance the flavors. Serves two.
Very refreshing

Blackberries cost a bomb here, but I have some free limes.

Nix the blackberries until they come down in price. ✅

I’ve never heard of eating papaya seeds. I have a love/hate with papaya… it’s never quite as good as I anticipate. I prefer mango.

I probably like papaya because the first time I had it was on Kauai. It was delicious. 🧡🍃🥭

Yeah… it’s fairly easy to get here so it doesn’t “hit” the same. I simultaneously figured out I only like some guava… but I don’t know the diff varieties.

I don’t think I’ve ever tasted guava. 🤔

I’m used to papaya, guave, and mango being served together as tropical fruit. I like some guava drinks, but not the fruit itself, which can range from totally bland to pineapple/strawberry. I seem to get the bland ones.

If you decide to try, look for the ones with pink juicy flesh. The ones that look like apples inside are the ones that I find bland.

I have to try this. I usually have papaya for breakfast, and also use it for salads, including fruit salads, but onions with fruit is a new one on me. Sounds intruiging.

I found it quite satisfying. I’ve also mixed watermelon chunks with jalapeños. Tasty! 💥
